Synergy:
The National VA Social Work Newsletter

Established in 1996 by the newly formed Social Work Public Relations Committee, Synergy was the national VHA Social Work newsletter.  “Synergy” is derived from the Greek syn-ergo meaning working together.  It is the term used to describe a situation where the final outcome of a system is greater than the sum of its parts and the resulting benefits from combining two (or more) different groups or processes.

Synergy was a national publication with articles on the accomplishments, innovations, best practices, and research of VA social workers. The newsletter provided dinformation and points of interest about social work in the VA regarding current and future trends in social work practice, accomplished leaders and other useful information. With the wide use of the Internet, it became easily accessible to staff social workers, managers, and VACO/VISN/facility leaders.

In 2016, Synergy took on a different format and began to be published on the VA internal communication system called VA Pulse. "VA Pulse is an internal collaborative platform that connects people, ideas, and programs across the organization." It's a type of social media for the VA organization. Therefore, Synergy is no longer in printable newsletter format nor is it available to anyone other than current VA employees.
